Inspiring Leaders I have Met
Attending the RME conference was an experience beyond compare, where the convergence of diverse minds and ideas formed an atmosphere of profound enlightenment. Amidst this intellectual tapestry, an unexpected highlight emerged – an encounter with none other than Pope Francis himself. His presence exuded a sense of humility and warmth that instantly connected with the essence of the event.
Meeting Pope Francis and witnessing his speech was an encounter that will forever be etched in Amani’s memory. It reaffirmed the power of shared wisdom and the potential for positive change when diverse perspectives converge in pursuit of a greater good.
Meeting Mohamed El Munir A. Safieldin, PHD was a remarkable encounter that left a lasting impression. As the UNICEF Representative in Uganda since January 2021, his extensive background as a public policy analyst, economist, and strategist spanning over three decades within the UN and NGOs resonated deeply with our shared aspirations.
Meeting Munir Safieldin was a reminder that individuals with vast experience and expertise have the power to channel their insights into transformative action.
The meeting with Hon. Liesje Schreinemacher, the Minister for Foreign Trade and Development Cooperation of the Netherlands, at Nakivale was a moment of significance that highlighted the potential for positive change through innovative approaches. During the interaction, Amani had the privilege to share our endeavors focused on harnessing social entrepreneurship and business development training to empower the youth, enabling them to establish social enterprises and generate employment opportunities.
The exchange served as a bridge between our grassroots initiatives and the international policy landscape.
In 2022, Amani met Efosa Ojomo at the bootcamp organised by Clayton Christensen Institute and MIT. As a lead facilitator, Efosa was truly inspiring and mind opening.
Efosa Ojomo is a Nigerian author, researcher and speaker. He leads the Global Prosperity research group at the Clayton Christensen Institute for Disruptive Innovation, a think tank based in Boston and Silicon Valley and is a senior research fellow at the Harvard Business School.
Efosa gave Amani a gift book entitled the Prosperity Paradox that has truly changed my perspective on innovation.
During the RME summit in Italy, Amani met Rebecca Telford, a prominent advocate for SDG 4 within the refugee context. As the Chief of Education at UNHCR, her extensive experience spanning over 20 years in crisis and conflict zones, with a significant portion in sub-Saharan Africa, has positioned her as a seasoned leader in the field.
Rebecca’s dedication to education as a fundamental right for refugees was evident as we engaged in discussions about supporting Sustainable Development Goal 4 – Quality Education.
Meeting Shai Reshef in September 2023 was a significant and inspiring encounter that reaffirmed the impact of Amani’s work in the refugee sector, particularly in the domains of education and business development. As the President of the University of the People (UoPeople), Shai Reshef’s dedication to accessible education and his visionary approach to breaking down barriers resonated deeply.
UoPeople’s commitment to providing tuition-free, accredited education to individuals irrespective of their financial, geographic, or societal circumstances aligns seamlessly with Amani’s own endeavors in the refugee space.
Shai’s appreciation for the efforts Amani invested in this realm was both validating and motivating.
Encountering Arash Bordbar was a profound and inspiring experience that lit the remarkable impact an individual can make as a leader and advocate for refugee education. As an Associate Education Officer at UNHCR, Arash’s dedication to this cause is evident, reflecting his personal journey and commitment to positive change.
In a world often marred by challenges, Arash stands as an embodiment of hope and possibility. His work transcends job titles, encompassing a legacy of resilience and progress. As our paths crossed, Amani was reminded that individuals like Arash have the power to redefine narratives and inspire us all to create a more inclusive and compassionate world.
In the remarkable month of October 2022, It was a profound honour and cherished memory meeting Her Royal Highness Princess Anne, accompanied by her husband.
Their visit was centered around a series of transformative initiatives that had sprouted from the visionary platform known as Unleashed.
In the stirring month of September 2022, an encounter of immense significance unfolded as Amani had the privilege of meeting Filippo Grandi. His role as the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) had already earned him a reputation as a tireless advocate for displaced individuals around the world. Little did Amani know that his words during the meeting would leave an indelible mark on his perspective.
“Remember you have the potential to inspire your countries of origins AND the countries where you have received asylum: show them that you are tomorrow’s leaders.”
